1.        Training Program Director reviews: June 2010

The TPD reviews were aimed to review your training progress, in preparation for the upcoming ARCPs. The most salient action point points that emerged were:

The prescribed numbers of work-based assessments (WBA) are only a suggested minimum and it is anticipated that trainees would have to undertake far more of these in order to be used as formative learning tools. For example, literature suggests that at least 8-12 mini- ACEs are needed to paint a comprehensive picture of a trainee’s competencies.

WBAs need to be assessed by a range of different assessors so as to allow triangulation of evidence to support individual competences. However, assessments by Consultant trainers tend to be qualitatively different from others, and it is suggested that trainees undertake sufficient assessments with consultants.

Trainees need to take initiative in guiding the discussion relating to the feedback section of WBAs. In particular, trainees need to help identify SMART (Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant/Realistic & Time-bound) learning objectives as outcomes of WBAs.

Trainees should preferably use the mini-PAT on the METIS, rather than the College instrument- as a tool for multisource feedback.

All WBAs need to be accompanied by a description of the case/ situation in question, which should be linked appropriately to the relevant ILOs (Intended Learning Objectives). This would allow for each curricular objective (ILO) to be mapped to a range of different types of evidence, and thus, contribute to a robust and formative system of learning.

Educational supervision: Please discuss and agree (with your educational supervisor) a dedicated (& time-tabled) hour each week for educational supervision. Think in advance, about how you wish to use this time, and keep a record of these discussions in your portfolio. Please contact me at the beginning of the placement if you have any difficulties in this respect.

Psychotherapy training: Trainees are required to attend at least 30 Balint group sessions, and undertake supervised therapy for 2 cases (from different modalities), each assessed using SAPEs and an ACE.

Teaching, management and research: While it is recognised that there may be limited opportunities to be actively involved in cutting-edge research during core training, trainees need to plan related learning activities in an innovative manner. The same applies to teaching and management.

It is mandatory for all trainees to complete and upload form 4 of their NHS appraisal, and undergo regular reviews of their training with their respective educational supervisors.

Finally, try and participate actively your local teaching program and liaise with your site tutors to develop this program to meet your needs in preparing for your examinations.

2.         Tracked Placements for CT1 doctors (2010 cohort):   CT1 trainees starting their core psychiatry placements have been     tracked in to the following 4-placements for the first two years of their training. As they stand, the placements are as follows:

3.             CT1-3 placements August 2010:   The clinical placements from August 2010 have proved to be particularly challenging for two reasons: firstly, there have been a large number of resignations from the training program, and secondly, a large number of CT3 trainees have had to be placed in CT3 posts for August 2010. To add to this, there appears to have been an alternate/ erroneous version doing the rounds too! The following placement list is the most up-to-date version and has been drawn up after due consideration of both- trainee preferences and training needs.

4.          Audit Projects:    The Trust’s NICE implementation lead, Pam Tester, has informed that there are two audit projects available for trainees to participate in. These relate to compliance with NICE guidelines on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Bipolar disorder. The standards and data collection tools are already in place, and recommendations from these audits have a high chance of having an impact in how we manage these disorders within the rust.
