Funding mental health at a local level: unpicking the variation

NHS Providers and the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) surveyed finance directors in mental health trusts and chief finance officers in CCGs to understand how the parity of esteem commitment is being implemented locally. The survey found that the government’s commitment to parity of esteem between mental and physical health services is being undermined by a failure to ensure funding increases reach the frontline with only half (52%) of providers reporting that they had received a real terms increase in funding of their services in 2015/16.

Monitoring the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards report shows the need for greater efforts to protect vulnerable adults

The CQC have published their sixth annual monitoring report on how hospitals and care homes in England are using the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.  Data from CQC’s specialist inspection regime shows that there is variation between providers. This means that people are not consistently receiving the protections of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, which help to make sure that they are treated and cared for with dignity and respect, as much as possible in line with their own wishes.

Mental health crisis review – experiences of black and minority ethnic communities

Race Equality Foundation, June 2015

The Race Equality Foundation was commissioned by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to conduct a series of interviews and focus groups with black and minority ethnic people, in specific areas, who had experience of crisis care. Focus groups and interviews were carried out in the five mental health trust areas between August and November 2014. Participants were recruited through local voluntary sector organisations. A total of 76 people took part in focus groups and/or interviews facilitated by local organisations, who carried out recruitment. Several of the people from focus groups were also interviewed on their own to gain a better insight into their experience.

Right Here, Right Now: CQC publish report on people’s experience of care during a mental health crisis

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) have launched a report which shows that there are variations in the help, care and support available to people in crisis and that a person’s experience depends not only on where they live, but what part of the system they come into contact with.  As a signatory to the Concordat, CQC committed to providing a national overview on crisis care. The CQC carried out a thematic review of the quality, safety and effectiveness of care provided to people experiencing a mental health crisis by regulated providers and providers/ agencies with responsibility for operating the Mental Health Act 1983.  This report provides a summary of the findings of this review as well as recommendations.

Care improvement works

A free online resource aimed at care providers has been launched which provides support in driving up standards. Care Improvement Works, developed in partnership with Skills for Care and support from the Think Local Act Personal consortium, maps a range of products to the Care Quality Commission’s inspection questions and ‘key lines of enquiry’. People who use services, and carers, can use the resource to question the quality of care they receive.
