Healthy living: mosques

The aim of this guide is to provide mosque leaders and communities with public health evidence and recommendations, demonstrating how these recommendations link into Islamic teachings, with case study examples from local mosques.  The guide includes a self-assessment checklist for mosques to reflect on current initiatives, identify gaps, recognise achievement and develop plans for future projects.

This Library bulletin provides further reading to support the ‘Making Every Contact Count’ programme.

There are links to recent research papers and articles in each of the MECC areas to give you further background information and evidence to consolidate what you have learned in your training, and to give you ideas and confidence for using MECC in your day-to-day encounters.

This issue features recent Cochrane reviews on workplace interventions for reducing sitting, dietary fibre for prevention of cardiovascular disease and combined interventions for smoking cessation, as well as other peer-reviewed articles.  There is also a link to resources for implementing MECC and a report on why people struggle to make behavioural changes and what can be done to overcome these hurdles.

Promoting the health and wellbeing of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men

This action plan consolidates data from a Public Health England report published in July 2014 that establishes the evidence base for the health inequalities affecting men who have sex with men. It sets out plans for the next 18 months to reduce inequalities in local areas and address the wider causes, working with and supporting local and national government, the NHS and relevant third sector organisations.
