Management of epilepsy in adults with intellectual disability – CR203

This report aims to clarify the role of the psychiatrist in intellectual disabilities (ID) in the management of epilepsy. The proposed tiered system of professional competency gives psychiatrists the option to identify their role in care provision and ensures a framework for training. It provides a structure from which a competency evaluation can be developed. The vision should be for all psychiatrists working with people with ID to have training and certification to one of the three levels of competency (Bronze, Silver and Gold).

Health and Care of People with Learning Disabilities

This interactive report investigates the potential differences in the treatment, health status, and outcomes of people with learning disabilities.

The report found that:

  • On average, females with learning disabilities had around an 18 year shorter life expectancy than the general population, and males had around a 14 year shorter life expectancy than the general population
  • The percentage of patients known to their GP as having a learning disability who received an annual learning disability health check increased to 46 per cent from 43 per cent in 2014-15
  • Obesity is twice as common in people aged 18-35 with learning disabilities, being underweight is twice as common in people aged over 64 with learning disabilities, compared with patients with no learning disabilities
  • 3 in 4 eligible patients with a learning disability received colorectal cancer screening, an increase from just over 2 in 3 in 2014-15

Local support for people with a learning disability

National Audit Office, March 2017

This report examines how the NHS in England and local authorities seek to improve the lives of the 129,000 people aged 18 to 64 who use local authority learning disability support services. It finds that good progress has been made by the Department of Health and NHS England in setting up a programme to close hospital beds for people with a learning disability, but the programme is not yet on track to achieve value for money.

Staying put: developing dementia-friendly care and support for people with a learning disability

This report calls for the needs of people with learning disabilities and dementia to be better addressed. It focuses on how best to support the growing numbers of people with the condition. It is based on recent work with care providers aiming to improve the quality of life of people with a learning disability and dementia, and the challenges to this goal.

Dame Christine Lenehan was asked by the Department of Health to take a strategic overview and recommend what practical action can be taken to co-ordinate care, support and treatment for children and young people with complex needs (and behaviour that challenges) involving mental health problems and learning disabilities and/or autism.

This report makes 11 recommendations for government departments and partners at a national level on how to improve the system.
