Adult Safeguarding: Roles and Competencies for Health Care Staff

One of the most important principles of safeguarding is that it is everyone’s responsibility. Health care staff frequently work with people in their moments of greatest need and can witness health and social inequalities which have a direct impact on the lives of people they care for. This intercollegiate document has been designed to guide professionals and the teams they work with to identify the competencies they need in order to support individuals to receive personalised and culturally sensitive safeguarding. It sets out minimum training requirements along with education and training principles.

Left to chance: the health and care nursing workforce supply in England

Report from the Royal College of Nursing that finds the current approach to workforce planning in England is fragmented and incomplete, with no clear national accountability for ensuring that nursing staff with the right skills arrive in the right parts of the health care system at the right time. The lack of comprehensive data on current nursing staff and training numbers means that national workforce planning is incoherent, and credible workforce strategy impossible.  It notes that since nurse bursaries were abolished, the 2018 applications to UCAS for nursing courses have seen a 13% fall compared to the same time last year, a total fall of 33% since the same time in January 2016.

Domestic Abuse Pocket Guide

This guide has been developed in response to the recognition by the RCN of the need for nurses, midwives and health care support workers and all health care professionals to have an understanding of the impact of the domestic abuse of patients, clients and colleagues.

Protection of Nurses Working with Children and Young People

This guidance aims to raise awareness among nurses and their managers of the complex issues surrounding safeguarding in the context of relationships between nurses and children and young people. We include the age range of 0-18 (up to 25 years in line SEND reforms) in this definition and also advocate the need for special consideration in view of children and young people who may have a disability, or other need that affects their mental capacity to make decisions. This guidance concentrates on allegations of abuse made against staff eg, smacking a child, inappropriate physical contact.

Fair care for trans patients

The nursing community can, through its professional actions and interests, work to eliminate this at both an individual and a societal level in partnership with a range of organisations, including those who represent the needs of trans people. This resource is designed to help you respond to the needs of patients and clients who identify as transgender. Initially created in response to an RCN Congress resolution, this guidance has been updated following further research from other organisations.
